FAUX FASHIONISTA

I have created the term 'Faux Fashionista' as a way of describing certain individuals, who claim to be 'very' interested in fashion; but when asked about it, their justifications are limited and simply structured. They may say, they like Chanel or Gucci (perhaps the more obvious brands), but when I ask about the recent collections, they seem stunned and confused.

Could they name one?

Truthfully, I think it's very disappointing. I feel as though, girls (and boys) say these things, for social desirability. They want to seem apart-of-the-now, involved or accepted because if they don't know about fashion, it's 'not cool enough'. Perhaps fashion seems intimidating or frightening from their perspective, so they simply pass a "Yes, I like fashion" to get on with it.

However, it turns comical. Many aspire to become involved with the fashion industry, as models, writers or even designers, but they have no knowledge of fashion. Of course they can name the obvious brands, as stated before, or the more well-known models and icons. But they have no idea what they did, what made them icons or even their job titles. Anna Wintour once said "I look for someone who has actually read the magazine [Vogue US]. People will say, "Oh, I love Vogue," but when I ask them to tell me something specific they liked, or a photographer whose work they enjoy, they look at me as if I'm crazy."

It's one thing to say you're not into fashion, but to have no knowledge and get into the business? There are hundreds, if not thousands, of struggling designers who can't afford to pay rent in their studios, who cannot hire eligible models or artisans, but there are those who can? These individuals have no idea what an 'atelier' or 'haute couture' is, but they have the money, to buy their way in.

I don't think the means for conformity will change, for a very, very long time. Teenagers constantly ask "What do I have to do, to be like her?", "Will losing 5lbs help?" or "How did she do her hair again?" and it's truly a shame. Perhaps they will avoid being a Faux Fashionista, and become truly interested in the business. Hopefully, they will have a broader perspective on fashion, than just Chanel or Gucci.

  2. I love this post Victor, I completely agree with you. There are so few people who I can have a decent conversation with about fashion, and that's actually quite sad.

  3. I totally agree with you Victor. Some people see fashion as form of luxury without even knowing its worth. it's like they knew the brand but not its designer. they loved the magazine but they didn't even bother to read the articles they're just looking for the pictures of Ad campaigns.

    1. I agree with you, I see this all the time. Buying the magazine just for the ads, they think it looks 'cool' to hold, whilst walking around. They only see what's obvious, never reading between the lines.

  4. Wow, can I applaud you? This is so true. I got into fashion just about a year ago and I've been taking a class at my school to learn about the fashion industry and I've learned so much and you really don't know how intricate the industry is until you go into depth with it. Overall, great statement. *insert applause here*

  6. This is so true, I agree with a lot of what you said but sometimes 'faux fashionistas' do like fashion but they only look at the big brands because thats all they know or they simply don't know where to start or how the industry works.

    1. Yeah, and it's a shame. People should be interested in fashion, it surrounds them every day!

  7. absolutely true though i think to be interested in fashion doesnt mean to know about the latest fashion shows etc. for me real fashionistas are people with an individual style and not people who just go with the latest fashion because its in .. dunno, just my opinion :)and i completely agree with the part about the vogue magazine!!!

    1. Yes fashion is about being an individual and having a personal style, however, if they claim to be interested in fashion, why don't they know much about it? It's the audacity to show-off and believe they are above others, when they have no clue what they're actually talking about

  8. I understand what you mean but so what if somebody likes fashion but dont know so much about it.. Who cares ? Maybe you and some another people know so much about fashion but everyone Sorento. 1. It's because they are able to use their wealth, to buy their way into the industry. They have no knowledge, whereas passionate designers are struggling to keep their brand afloat, such as Christian LaCroix. They have no idea what they're talking about, but their money can support them. Money that would be more suitable, with others.

  9. I completely agree with you on this! I know many people who state to be very passionate about the world of fashion, but the only brand/desiner that brings a 'I know this one' expression on their face is actually Chanel or Prada. And those so called fashionistas would be very surprised to hear about Alberta Ferreti or, God forbidden, Cop.Copine.

  10. You my dear Victor are a genius, your writing is magnificent. I totally agree with you, these Faux Fashionistas are everywhere. It's important to know what are you talking about, fashion is more than just Karl Lagerfeld. He is a good designer but not the only one. People that claim themselves as fashionistas don't even know that "Coco Chanel" was actually named Gabrielle. That's basic knowledge about fashion.

Keep it up with your amazing writing my lovely Victor.

  11. I completely agree with you and couldn't have said it better myself. I'm not big on fashion; i don't follow the fashion industry closely at all, just read blogs here and there sometimes but i know a thing or two. I just have a strong dislike when people are 'passionate about fashion' and barely know more than i do. Like you said, it mainly is for social benefits, if any. Can't believe you are only 16, you are so talented! I hope you become even more successful, you deserve it!

  14. This post is probably your best yet! A lot of girls "have a passion for fashion", so they start blogs with the kind of energy of superiority. I wish people were honest and open instead of pretending to have a great knowledge about the fashion industry as a whole. Liking clothes and style is different to knowing fashion. It frustrates me when these people rave about Acne because they think it's cool or Sass and Bide, when really they just hitched on to the Tumblr band wagon and the new "it brand" of the season. Educate yourself people! Thanks for a post which really encourages conversation, I look forward to more like it x

  15. Totally agree, omg. It's a little annoying when people post comments like "fashion is my life" but then really don't have any true knowledge about fashion. I have never claimed to really "know" fashion, but I do enjoy pretty pictures of gorgeous people wearing amazing clothes. I do NOT plan on majoring in fashion or becoming a model, both of which are very unlikely for most. You don't get a lot of money from a fashion major, unless if you are the top of the top, and modeling is, as you have pointed out in your other post, very competitive. So anyway, lovely post, man. :) Have a fabulous day!
